Spanish is the 2nd most popular language in the world with 329 million native speakers and is the national language of twenty countries. Here are a few different reasons for learning spanish:
Emergency Situations
With so many hispanic immigrants, you are probably going to come into contact with one at some point- especially if you live in the United States. What would happen if you got into a car accident with a spanish speaker? Knowing spanish could get you out of a lot of trouble and even save your life in a dire situation.
Travel
Spanish speaking countries offer many great travel destinations. From the Wine Vineyards in Argentina all the way to beaches of Barcelona- there are so many options. Knowing spanish will make it much easier to order food, talk to taxi drivers, and book hotel arrangements. Conversational spanish will be necessary if you are thinking about living in a spanish speaking country for a long or short period of time.
Work/Employment Opportunites
In many cases, employers like to hire candidates who can speak a foreign language. Knowing spanish looks great on a resume and will put you ahead of other candidates (all else equal). The is especially true in parts of the southern United States, where it is actually a disadvantage to not know spanish. You can also have the opportunity to work in a spanish speaking country.
Culture
Learning spanish will allow you to appreciate spanish culture, and will give you the ability to watch classic spanish movies and sitcoms. There is more to the world than the country you live in, and fully understanding a different culture will give you a broader perspective in life.
Romance Languages
Mastering spanish will make it easier in learning one of the other romance language such as portuguese, french, or italian. They are all similar in natural and follow many of the same rules and structure. The same approach that you used to learn spanish can be used to learn any of the other romance languages. You have the blueprint- all you need to do is put in the time.
There is no question that learning spanish will give you more opportunities in life. Not only that, but it will feel rewarding to put in the hard work and exercise your brain. It will be a lot of work, but the benefits are unmatched.
